Job Order/Position Requirements
Position Title: RN – Surgical
Report to: Jan Backus Dept: Surgical
Skills and Job Functions
Skilled in pain assessment and reassessment. This unit gets all types of patients; general surgical, gall bladders, gyn’s, gu’s, a lot of ortho (his and knees), sepsis, diabetic, neurosis patients and some patients down from ICU. Ability to start IV’s. Able to recognize status changes in patients, especially sepsis patients. Change wound dressings, assess and treat wound infections. Ability to take initiative. Equipment
Horizon charting and medication administration system. PIXIS and Omincel for medication and supply ordering.
Experience, Licensures and Certifications
Minimum of 1 year experience. Wyoming State License. BLS.
Schedule requirements
Schedule is done one month at a time. Shifts will be 12-hour shifts from 0600 to 1800 or 1800 to 0600 depending on the requested need. Employee may work a day night rotational shift. Work weekends on a rotational basis.
Additional Information
29-bed unit with majority of them private suites. Ratios: day shift 1 to 5 (6), night shift 1 to 5 (6). Average stay for a patient on the surgical floor is 4 days. Entire facility has adopted a new Care Model.

As a pivotal partner within the health care delivery team, the RN will ensure the delivery of quality patient care, both individually as well as through leadership and delegation to other team members.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• The employee shall comply with all safety and health standards, and all rules, regulations, and orders which are applicable to the individual’s own position, actions, and conduct.
• Perform duties and responsibilities within the scope of a Registered Professional Nurse defined by the Nurse Practice Act and Wyoming Medical Center policies and procedures
• Assesses, develops, implements and evaluates plan of care for the patient utilizing a holistic approach
• Admission, transfer & discharge process according to unit protocols
• Collaboratively assesses and develops an education plan for patient and family
• Maintain confidentiality standards for patients and patient related information
• Practice quality management according to JCAHO and OSHA standards
• Keep current on WMC Polices and Procedures
• Practice basic computer applications
• Maintains competence in age specific requirements in patient care
• Document according to WMC policies and procedures
• Maintain code of Ethics within practice
• Complies with WMC policies and procedures concerning Advanced Directives
• Appropriate reporting of occurrences according to WMC risk management guidelines
• Performs required chart audits
• Practice pain assessment and management according to protocol.
• Follow WMC restraint policy
• Delegate tasks appropriately
• Coordinate patient care
• Transcribe and implement physician orders
• Administer blood/blood products according to WMC policies and procedures
• Administer medications according to WMC policies and procedures
• Perform venipuncture and administer IV therapy according to WMC policies and procedures
• Interpret lab results and follows up appropriately
• Transport sedated or monitors patients according to WMC policies and procedures
• Insert, maintain or removes tubes and catheters per WMC policies and procedures
• Participate in or coordinate care conferences
• Practice aseptic technique
• Practice proper technique in specimen collection and care
• Follows policy for post mortem care, including organ donation
• Consistently practice patient safety
• Mentor new staff
• Maintain clean and neat work environment
• Practices moderate/deep sedation according to WMC polices and procedures
• Identifies trends and initiates or facilitates problem solving efforts
• Utilizes CQI methodology and tools (FOCUS/PDCA)
